1863 **150th anniversary** Casey Jones, a railroad engineer who died while trying to stop his passenger train from colliding with a stalled freight train, was born in Missouri.

1903 **110th anniversary** The US Senate ratified the Hay-Herrán treaty between the US and Columbia. The treaty would have allowed the US to build a canal across the Panamanian isthmus, and to lease a strip of land in perpetuity. The treaty was never ratified by the Columbian congress.
